One of the reasons I love ceramics is that it tends to be all-encompassing. Although we have the luxury of modern kiln technology, the journey from earth to fired vessel requires a vast amount of energy, eons of change, and hundreds of hands. I try to be involved in each step as much as possible, placing emphasis on the process being the product.

Ceramics have never been more important than now, a moment seated within the dawn of artificial intelligence. The weight of earth, the heat of the kiln, the sound of two cups as they chime in unison, the taste of a fine tea or whiskey as it’s vessel is brought to the lips. These are what our senses were built upon, and these remain capable to bring our minds to simpler times and pleasures. Perfection is never the goal of making pottery. Beauty, character, and purpose is more readily found in an organic form where imperfection, negotiated texture, and controlled chaos culminate in the form which rests in your hand.

CERAMICS AS A PROCESS

Brandon is a ceramicist based in Lompoc, California. He received a bachelor in Fine Art at The University of the Arts, and a Master’s degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. He was born in Maine, and spent much of his life traveling the reaches of Europe and Asia teaching, farming, and eating. He draws creative inspiration from the many people, places, and cultures encountered, and hopes that his humble pottery can contribute toward making the world a smaller, simpler, and happier place.

Pottery has an innate ability to recall the origins of human innovation, as it is one of the oldest forms of human technology. It is often taken lightly, but sharing a simple cup of coffee with a loved one engages us in a ritual spanning some 35000 years of collective history. Ancient tradition meets contemporary familiarity in these humble vessels, and it is my hope that they bring you thoughtful joy for years to come.
